Magical Faces Extravaganza
Participatory event and studio visit by Katya Quel
20 July 2025, Börnestrasse 5A, Berlin
Magical Faces Extravaganza was an afternoon gathering that combined masquerade, performance, and informal studio presentation in the domestic setting of the artist's garden. The event invited guests to step into a world of playful fantasy, becoming living artworks through the act of masking and performative dress.
Each participant selected a unique hand-crafted mask on arrival—distributed on a first-come, first-served basis—and contributed to a silent film shot during the event. The masquerade unfolded among pastel-dressed, baroque, hippie, and fairy-like figures, transforming the garden into a collaborative, dreamlike environment.
Alongside the performative element, visitors were welcomed into the artist's studio and offered light refreshments in the garden. The soundtrack of the event was curated to enhance the ethereal atmosphere and soften the boundaries between artist, guest, and artwork.
Magical Faces Extravaganza continues Katya Quel’s practice of hosting participatory situations that merge fantasy aesthetics with informal, socially embedded encounters. It builds on her ongoing interest in post-internet mythology, soft world-building, and the poetics of costume and disguise
